Drawing Women Notes:
Learn fundamental anatomy
Obviously if you want to draw humans more effortlessly you should study humans. Start with the major bones and muscles as well as the foundations of human proportion. Though every individual is slightly different, every human body tends to follow general forms, lengths, and relationships between major features.
For instance, the tips of the fingers (when the arm is hanging) will tend to line up with around the mid thigh. Or a hand is generally 2/3 the length of a head. These are not hard rules, but guidelines you can use to get most of the idea right.
Learn how female anatomy is different
Obviously (again) to make drawing women even easier you should study female humans. Women and men have the same basic muscular and skeletal structures, but there are slight variations that make a character look female.
For instance, wider hips, thinner shoulder girdle, less muscle mass, and higher average body fat content are all tell-tale signs of a female presenting figure. These signs are hard coded into human brains, so take advantage of them if you want to draw more girlish characters.
Use a reference
To learn anatomy, whether male or female, use and study more human references. Using a reference is not cheating. It’s how you learn how reality works. Only once you understand the pieces can you start to play with them – and enter into artistic flow states. Right now drawing characters is difficult, because you don’t understand the pieces you are playing with.
Imagine how hard it would be to play chess if you didn’t understand the rules yet still tried to play. When you draw a character, you are imitating reality. If you want to draw better characters, study reality. To avoid this reality is effectively one of the best tools you have to learn.
