Drawing Animal Poses Tips:
Use a drawing references
Just like humans, animals and pets are no different when figuring out how to draw figures. If you’re not confident about how to draw a certain character or creature, it’s a smart idea to find a reference of whatever animal you’re drawing – and it’s not cheating. It’s a learning opportunity.
Find 2-3 images of the animals and do some quick studies on their general shape and structure, as well as some of their trademark elements – like the orientation of their eyes, markings, ears, etc.
Understand the animal basics
Large amounts of animals can be recreated from similar shape orientation families. Bipedal animals (generally birds) tend to follow repeating structures – for instance their legs all tend to follow the same shape language.
It’s the same for most quadrupedal animals whether cats, dogs, horses, or a goat. Their bodies all have very similar muscular and skeletal systems. So rather than focusing on each individual animal, you can focus on animal families and general shapes, then learn how to manipulate them for the specific animal.
The same logic extends to a lot of animal heads. Many mammals (at their most basic shape language) have similarly shaped heads. Deer heads and wolf heads, though mortal enemies, have similar shape logic to their faces.
Learn the basic of anime art
If you want to draw your animals in a cartoon (or anime) style, learn the basics of cartooning. Focus on the absolute fundamentals of shapes and lines and how to manipulate them. The heart of cartooning is reducing the complexity of an object to its bare essentials. A circle with 2 dots and a line can communicate a smiling face. This same logic can be extended to drawing cartoon animals, pets, dogs, cats, or anything.
You start with life studies, then study how to reduce objects to the bare minimum visual language, then manipulate the pieces – this is how you cartoon. This works for both western (Disney) and anime styles.
