Drawing Action Figures Notes:

Some tips for beginners.

Line of Action

If your gestures are feeling unbalanced, try starting with a line of action – a simple C or S curve. Next, mark a line in the middle of your line of action followed by 3 circles in the top half of your line of action to plot out the head, chest, and hips.

Build out your limbs and form out from this root line of action and your 3 guide circles. Starting with a line of action helps keep your pose from becoming too busy as you balance all the elements in an action scene.

Use A Reference

If you don’t know what you’re doing, don’t guess – find a reference or a pose. If you’re guessing you aren’t learning. Smart artists know that to get good you start with reality then add imagination – not the other way around. If you start with guesswork your pieces will always turn out weaker, and you’ll progress slower.

Real artists use references. Imagine telling old masters doing studies of fruit bowls they’re cheating XD

Draw Figures At An Angle

If you want to imply movement and action, try putting your characters at an angle. Straight up and down implies nothing quick is happening. That’s fine if you just want a walking pose, but every other action pose generally benefits from tilting your characters a little.

Cross Limbs and Torsos

A quick hack is to create contrasting positions in your body parts. You can twist your torso so the front of your hips and front of the chest face in different directions. A twisted torso implies torque and tension about to be released or just released. Imagine swinging a sword, you wind up your core like a spring. Use that.

Same for your limbs, your arms and legs should be opposing i.e. if the left leg is forward the left arm should be behind – and same for the right. I dare you to try to run without your limbs moving opposite. It won’t work very well. I promise.
