Hand Drawing Tips
Palms and fingers are the same length
When you draw hands remember that the overall length of the hand is half fingers and half palm – generally. Many mistakenly draw fingers too long or too short relative to the palm length. Also note that the first digit of the finger makes up about half of the overall finger lenth.
Start rough and use a plan
If you’re not confident drawing hands start slow and be mindful of the pieces. Start with the palm, then draw in the fingers as single lines first. Don’t add the finger definition until you feel the finger placement is confident. Otherwise you’re just going to be doing a lot of erasing. You can also use the “wave” or “mitten” techniques to place fingers.
Find a reference
If you’re unsure how to draw a hand the best way to figure it out is to use a photo reference. Take a picture of your own hand with your phone, then draw from it. Account for mirroring when you take the photo or flip it to the right orientation. You can copy and paste the photo into your drawing program (if you use digital) then trace over your hand as a guide. Tracing is a perfectly fine way to learn how to draw.
Don’t use too much detail
Anime is a cartoon, so you don’t need to be photorealistic. In fact, being too realistic will take away that feeling of “anime”. Anime relies heavily on implied and simplified lines. Remember to do the same and not get carried away. Next time you watch anime pay attention to the hands, and you’ll see what I’m talking about.
Happy drawing!
