Cute Anime Drawing Tips
Use Classic Poses
If you want to make your drawings cuter, take note of traditional anime poses. Think of the classic poses that are a hallmark of anime culture. For example, the classic peace sign is a quick shortcut to being anime and cute. Another favorite is bringing both hands to the mouth while smiling, in small fists bent away from the mouth. If you know anime, you’ll know the poses I’m talking about – so use them! They work for a reason.
Other examples include jumping in midair with a big smile, arms outstretched as if full of joy, playful head tilts, or a simple wave. Don’t get dynamic and complicated, just focus on classic tried and true anime poses.
Use Childish Actions or Cues
If you want to make your poses cute, focus on actions that feel playful. The trick is to think about things that remind you of being a child. Like I say draw a chracter blowing bubbles, it’s going to be really hard not to make it cute. See? Think of actions that harken back to the carefree actions of children: lollipops, big hats, toys, a carefree and light spirit. Avoid things like taxes, death, and divorces! Definitively not cute.
Use Cute Facial Expressions
Remember to use the face. It’s one of your best resources to tell stories when drawing – in this case telling viewer’s your character is cute. Just the line you choose for the mouth can completely change a piece. A small downward line? Agitated. A small smile? Coy or kind yet shy. A big smile? Brimming with joy and a love of life.
And this goes for the whole face. Mouth, eyelids, where the are looking, and eyebrows. Use them all. You can arrange the puzzle however you want – so arrange your pieces into a cut eone.
And you should mix these expressions your playful body poses or actions. A jump with a big smile, or a peace sign with a wink just compounds all that cuteness you’re packing into your pleasant little piece. In my opinion, effective character design and art should immediately tell the viewer what the mood is.
Use Your Proportions
If you want a cuter character, you can always change the proportions of the body. We see small children as cute, so drawing a character with childlike proportions gives the same feeling. The main way to do this is to make the head bigger compared to the body. A larger head makes the figure look more like a child.
You can change the ratio a little or a lot. If you push it to the max, you get a chibi style. In full chibi, the head is almost the same height as the body, in a 1 to 1 ratio. Don’t go past 1 to 1 though, it tends to look a bit silly! Also draw fewer body details. Don’t put muscles on a character on you want to be cute.
Though proportions are optional. You can easily make a massive, jacked male character look cute with smart use of posing, setting, action, and facial expressions. In fact the juxaposition might make it even cuter, because we see a very masculine looking character having a moment of levity.
Happy drawing!
