Couple Pose Drawing Tips

Body Language

The trick to couples poses is body language. How the people in the picture orient their bodies, from hands to hips, tell the viewer the relationship between the individuals. How do you make sure the viewers know they are not just friends? Or maybe only one party is overtly interested? It all comes down to intentional use of limb placement.

The Eyes

One of the best ways to suggest romantic interest or intent is through direct eye contact. Most people are uncomfortable with direct eye contact. It’s seen as a rather invasive or intense thing to receive, but not from a romantic partner. Part of being in a romantic relationship is the people in the couple are lowering their guard and being at least a little vulnerable – and welcoming or giving direct contact.

Do you want lovers? Make ’em look at each other.

Chest and Hips

Just like eye contact, most friends won’t like to orient their chest or hips directly in line with the other person. This, like eyes, can come off as a rather bold gesture – especially if you make contact. Imagine the next time you hug your friend and they press their hips into yours – not good lol. It’s the same for couple poses. If you want people to know they are a couple you can face their chest and hips toward each other.

Limbs

Just like eyes and the torso, we can use their limbs (whether arms or legs) to show they are close with each other. You can do easy things like make them hold hands, but also place hands on more vulnerable parts of the body. The vulnerable parts are the chest, belly, neck, face, or inner limbs. This is where our organs and big arteries are, so we psychologically protect these without even knowing. But if your characters are very comfortable with each other, they might let others touch these areas. Like all body language, romantic couples are about allowing vulnerability – implying that “deeper connection” has been made or wants to be made..

Hide Arms

One thing you might bump into when drawing couples is the abundance of limbs. That’s 4 arms and 4 legs. That’s a lot. If you’re feeling like you don’t know where or how to orient limbs, just lose them behind one person’s body – like behind a back. It’s a sneaky way to avoid facing the reality of you having no idea where that arm actually goes XD

Use Activities

Nothing says couples like a fun date. Share a straw. Hold hands on a theme-park ride. Walk together under an umbrella.

Happy drawing!
