Chibi Drawing Tips

Chibis bodies are (generally) unisex

One of the cool things about drawing chibi characters is how simple they are. Unlike full-body figures that need all the muscle groups and anatomy breakdowns, chibis work off a really universal base. The bodies are usually short and squishy (in the best way), with oversized heads and very simplified limbs. Because of that, most chibi poses are unisex – meaning you don’t need a totally different body just to draw a boy or girl.

Use the hair, eyes, and clothing to add personality

What makes a chibi look like your character isn’t the pose itself – it’s the little details: the hairstyle, the outfit, maybe a little bit of eyelash flair, and some subtle shape tweaks. For girl characters, you can hint at curves by adding a soft bump for the chest or a little extra roundness at the hips.

Proportions

When you draw chibi characters, think of it like shrinking your regular character into a fun-sized version.

Start with a big circle for the head – like, really big compared to the body. The body is usually just 2–3 heads tall, with simple shapes for the torso and limbs. You don’t need to worry much about muscles or perfect anatomy – just focus on clear shapes and cute proportions. Keep the hands and feet simple (mittens and stubs work great), and exaggerate expressions for extra charm.

The more you simplify, the better it tends to work. Chibi is all about sass and character, not complexity.

Happy drawing!
