Drawing Awesome Anime Pose Notes

Anime and cool are kind of synonymous, but here are some tips anyway.

Watch More Anime

It’s important you have a deep reservoir of influence to pull from when working on learning or drawing awesome female or male characters i.e. how can you learn what cool is if you don’t study it. Watch more anime. A car needs fuel to drive. You need inspiration to draw.

I’m giving you express permission to watch more anime for inspiration. Don’t be afraid to pause and move frame by frame in any of your top 10 anime fight scenes, press your face to the screen, and absorb the glory of it directly into your corneas.

Learn How to Pull From References

Now that your face is directly against the screen you’ll have to figure out how to take that image and turn it into a half or full body reference from which you can derive and produce high-quality character art.

This means you’ll need to either trace the base figure or learn enough anatomy you can draw strong skeletons and frames for characters. I suggest the latter as eye strain is a real risk for artists – especially if you work digital.

Study Japanese History and Culture

You may not know this, but anime is from Japan. So it would behoove you to have some awareness of Japanese history and culture if you want to make your own cool anime poses.

Don’t make the obvious mistake of pulling all your design cues from other characters. Those characters have great designs because the original artist likely studied real history for their inspiration. The best character designers tend to be devout students of history, always looking for new, cool, and antique items for new elements to mix and match.

The best way to make cool girl and boy character designs in an intelligent amalgamation of real historic references. It’s how you make something that doesn’t actually exist believable – you tie it to reality.
